New Rabbit Hutch!

My wonderful-awesome-super-fantabulous husband spent his entire Thanksgiving holiday and all day this past Saturday building me a new hutch for our Angora Bunnies, complete with nest boxes both for Kindling (babies!) and to get them out of the cold! (It was 17 degrees the night we finished construction).

The cages themselves are store bought units from Rural King (I don’t remember the brand) – they are 36″x30″x18″ – $33 a piece. The plywood nest boxes are 11 1/2″ x 30″ (roughly) and are integral to the wood structure. Right now the end pieces are nailed in but before the spring that will be changed and they’ll be hinged for access and cleaning – we lost the light and it was COLD so they got nailed on.

That rabbits seem to like them – although now they are covered in straw and need to be groomed horribly.  Also the straw is going to be a trial on the PVC sewage system we put in. There’s a cat litter syle container that goes beneath the downspout to transfer waste to the compost bin (the tray has holes for drainage).

But I’m happy with it - and more importantly, so are the Buns!

Knitting the Baby Hat

So I decided to knit a baby hat for a friend that had just given birth to a little girl… and it seems to have turned into an addiction (the hat, not the baby… ‘tho I haven’t seen her yet so it’s still a possibility).

Anyway – I bought a skein of Bernat Baby Jacquards in the Cherry Berry colorway (it’s self striping and the non-knitters in my life were absolutely fascinated with the resulting color pattern).

Bernat Baby Jacquards Ruffled Hat

I knitted the hat pattern that came with the skein, scared to death the whole time that it was going to turn into some monstrously complex thing that was going to eat my brain and have I mentioned my phobia of little needles? But I soldiered on with those little size 6′s (that I had to go back to the evil big box store to get later that day, once I figured out that in my huge stash of needles… there were no 6′s) – and lo, an adorable little hat was completed on Thanksgiving morning.

The hat was so adorable, and I had so much yarn left that when my mother requested another one for one of her friends, I said ‘Sure thing!’. So I made another one.

And then I thought… I wonder what this would like in an adult size. So I broke out the $8 a ball Sulka 60% Merino/20% Alpaca/20% Silk  from Mirasol in the Snow White colorway. I got over halfway through before I ran out (WAH!) so I’ll have to take another trip to the Not-So-Local-Yarn-Store before I can finish. But here’s a sneak peek:

So I was stuck on that project… when my eyes fell on the remaining half-skein of the Bernat Baby Jacquard… so another baby hat is in the works! It’s halfway done as well and it looks like there will be enough yarn still for a 4th one!

So let me reiterate… everybody’s getting hats for Christmas. :P Get your pattern and color requests in now!

Boys and Pink Scarves!

So a friend from work called me today to tell me she had found the scarf I made for her last Christmas in her son’s backpack yesterday.

The bright fluffy-girly-beyond-belief-PINK scarf. It was a five yarn (I believe) knit stitch scarf, absolutely beautiful (in my humble opinion) and one of my favorites.

Needless to say, she was a bit shocked and asked him why he had her scarf.  He said simply that he liked it. “But it’s pink”, she said – to which he replied, “Who’s cares? It’s soft and really warm! I like it!”

All I can say is – Bless that practical young man! And of course he has such good taste! :)

I’m going to make him his own Blue & Red one for this holiday season – his mother tells me they’re his favorite colors.

Macrame Hoops & Beads

Found a butt load of these acrylic macrame hoops at the Salvation Army – so many colors and different sizes. There were a few more beads but I didn’t care for them – the ones I got tho’ are totally cool. Spent $8 which was a little steep in my opinion but the lady running the register looked to be a bit irritated… maybe I snitched her find? Either way, take a look! I’ve considered doing a bit of macrame, I’ve got some patterns, but these would also make great purse handles!

The Mushroom Bead and the Big Green Butterfly Bead are marked Duncan’s Ceramic Products.
